My Thoughts On Gay Marriage

I posted this on Facebook this morning. I thought it would be a good piece to share here for those of you that we aren’t friends on Facebook. — I’m not going to change my photo to an equal sign but for the record I support equality. To give a little bit more personal take I have a couple family members who are homosexual. One was my Uncle Kevin who died of AIDS in 1991 when the common belief was that HIV was transmitted completely by the homosexual community. I was TEN at the time and didn’t halfway understand what was going on but if you remember that time then you know how far we have come on this subject. Sure I know their are lots of Christians who are against this for religious beliefs. Don’t give homosexuals equal rights was...

Today I got Baptized… Again

Today I took a big step in my Christian belief. Today I got baptized… for the second time. Shortly after Heather and I got married last April we began our search for a church close to home. We knew that this was an important step for us and visited a few other churches but we always found ourselves coming back to NewSpring. For me it was all about the sermons, and Heather loved the music. Coming from the traditional United Methodist background the rock concerts at NewSpring every Sunday were a little much, and they still can be. The sermons are always so relevant and powerful, though, and I believe it was a sermon back in October that really got me thinking about baptism again. As most everyone who knows me and reads this blog knows my father was a minister in...

Goodbye Skip, My Best Friend

Goodbye Skip, My Best Friend

Today I put Skip to sleep. Many of you know who Skip is, but for those who don’t, Skip was my long time faithful dog. Yesterday he couldn’t keep anything down, and when we woke up this morning he was completely lethargic. After blood work and an ultrasound this morning we discovered that he had gallbladder mucoceles. The main diagnosis for this is surgery to remove the gallbladder. I was forced to make one of the hardest decisions of my life. Skip was fifteen years old (some would argue sixteen… Mom). Because of his advanced old age there was no guarantee that he would survive the surgery, not to mention the fact that it is very expensive at a time in my life when I’m penny pinching. After leaving him at the animal hospital for the day he was only getting worse....

Why I left HubSpot to do nuCloud full-time

Why I left HubSpot to do nuCloud full-time

I have been very bad about blogging lately.  Not just bad about blogging here, but also on the .eduGuru and nuCloud blogs also.  If you look at the timeline you will see that my last blog post here was July 28th, 2011!  I promise I’m going to fix that. One of the reasons for my lack of blogging was I spent the last five months at HubSpot learning sales.  I say learning sales instead of “doing” sales because it was absolutely a learning experience for me.  The psychology of sales is something that everyone should learn.  Sales is one of those skills, like customer service and people management, that are invaluable no matter what profession you are in.  Sales is also an all-consuming beast that has kept me so focused on it that I haven’t been a...

Engaged: How It Happened and Lessons Learned

So for anyone who lives under a rock or simply doesn’t read Facebook/Twitter I got engaged last night!  It was months in the planning and Heather was none the wiser throughout the experience.  It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog post, but it feels like it’s time and this seems like a good story to tell.  Also me being the teacher that I am it feels like I might be able to give some guys some advice about how to do this important moment in their lives the right way.  Well, all this is simply my opinion and sometimes I’m full of it, but it might make an interesting enough story. Picking The Right Ring I am very much a traditionalist who likes to keep things simple.  When I first went looking at wedding rings, completely unbeknown to Heather, over...

My Latest Website Side Project (#mikefights)

For about six months now whenever I hang out with my buddy Mike Petroff we always end up staging hilarious pictures of us posing in fights and push them out to twitter.  At the HighEdWeb conference this week we decided to step up the game a little.  We had a running hashtag where we started posting lots of pictures and finally did what I always end up doing.  Pushing things too far and go and create a website for it. So here you go mikefights.me!  This is the first time I’ve used tumblr and so far I’m really impressed.  I’m not sure what all we have in store for the site, but until we figure it out be sure to get your follow on! Mikefights.me Tumblr Mikefights on...
